Reading all the news about Tigray in Ethiopia has me thinking about the Simien Mountains. How we were a day’s drive from the conflict zone (it wasn’t the first time we were close to similar conflict zones). Thinking how if it wasn’t for coronavirus we would have taken the drive through that region; to Axum, try not melting in Dallol (the hottest place on earth), the underground churches of Lalibela. etc. More hilarious is how a virus stopped us from going, but all the other more immediate dangers, didn’t (people with guns, the racist remarks, the stories of tourist getting stoned / attacked with machetes, etc.)
I hope to someday return and keep exploring.
The man pictured was our escort, as it was compulsory to have one for entering the park.
