Of all the places I never thought of going I would have to confess one of them is the Sultanate of Oman. Even when we heard our layover from Jakarta to Athens was in Muscat (the capital of Oman) we had to look on the map, and having a 24 hour layover we decided to use some hotel points and explore the city instead of exploring the airport. Safe to say we were both impressed* with the city and want to go back in the winter months to explore more of the country.
One of our stops in Muscat was Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which in its main (male) prayer room has the worlds second largest chandelier. Our guide told us it weighs over 8 tons and has 1,122 light bulbs. We chuckled as he told us how many lights bulbs because at the time there was a crew working to replace some, I guess with that many bulbs a few is bound to go out.
Here are other angles of the magnificent Italian craftsmanship.
* I think we were easily impressed by their organized and clean city having spent the last few months in “third world” chaotic south east Asia.
Oh-man, that’s a huge chandelier!!
